Preface to the Second Edition Several exciting major developments have changed the field of applied superconductivity since 1981, when the first edition of this text was published. New materials and fabrication methods and innovative device and circuit concepts have made profound changes in the way we practice in this field. The most public of the changes was the discovery in 1986 of high-temperature oxide superconductors, several of which quickly were shown to have transition temperatures above the boiling point of nitrogen. Equally important but less publicly obvious was a pair of key innovations in the fabrication of superconductive integrated circuits. A way of making high quality, durable niobium tunnel junctions and a procedure to avoid any processing steps intervening in the fabrication of the junctions, has led to stable, well controlled integrated circuits. New concepts in superconductive detectors and mixers has made superconductivity the technology of choice in millimeter wave radio astronomy. And in the digital field, innovative ideas for single flux quantum logic and for hybridization with semiconductor devices have brought new opportunities. To date, the high-temperature superconductors have had their major impacts in magnetometers and microwave receivers. The greatly reduced refrigerator burden when using these materials compared with the metal superconductors has stimulated very extensive research on making cables for extremely high field magnets, and optimism for use in power systems. The basic theory of superconductivity we presented in the 1981 edition is still very useful. There is, as yet, no accepted theory of electron pairing in the high-temperature superconductors and much of the practical work, including that on high-temperature superconductors, still relies on the theories in this book. Phenomenological theories have been developed to explain the behavior of high-temperature superconductors. And the low-temperature metallic superconductors continue to be of major importance, not least because of the success of Nb-Ti alloy in MRI magnets, by far the largest commercial market for superconductors. The low-temperature superconductor wire technology has matured over the past two decades and continues to make impressive progress. On the other hand, the fast pace of development of the physics and technology of the high-temperature superconductors presents us with a difficult choice. We have chosen to present a practical view of the current position, but freely admit that new results in this rapidly changing field may lead to a complete reappraisal. Between us two co-authors, we have had several decades of experience with applications of superconductivity, both in the university and in industry. We have attempted to infuse the presentations, particularly of the electronics part, with our practical views that we hope will be helpful to the readers. We thank several colleagues in the field including John Clarke, James Lukens, V. K. Kaplunenko, William McGrath, Oleg Mukhanov, Paul Richards, Andrew Smith, Stephen Whiteley, Yongming Zhang, who were very helpful with suggestions on sections in their areas of special expertise and in providing valuable data. There is a more expensive next edition, but all the basics are here. The math is not for the timid, but it doesn't get in the way of the physical effects.

This book starts from the basic physics of superconductivity and deals with superconducting devices, such as SQUIDs, SIS mixers and Single Flux Quantum devices. The treatments of each device are based on the current research, so that readers easily get the front of the fields. It also includes a prenty of important papers as the references and thus you can easily get into the deep level. I found one disadvantage that there is no statements on single electron/Cooper pair tunneling phenomena. I recommend this book for the persons to study superconducting electronics from students to the experts in this field. This book is valuable even for the persons who read the first editon because each treatments are updated.

About the Author
Joshua M. Greene has produced films for PBS and Disney, has served as vice president for New York’s largest PR firm, and was appointed director of strategic planning for the United Nations Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders. He was also an adjunct professor at Hofstra University in New York. His previous works include the best-selling Here Comes the Sun: The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison; Justice at Dachau: The Trials of an American Prosecutor; Witness: Voices from the Holocaust; and Gita Wisdom: An Introduction to India’s Essential Yoga Text. In 1970, he was initiated as Yogesvara Das by Bhakivedanta Swami Prabhupada and served for thirteen years in Prabhupada’s society as director of French-language publications.

While visiting the United States, the Beatles heard a broadcast of the Kallman record on radio. Of the four superstars, George Harrison was most taken by the sound. He asked the band’s road manager to order copies of the album, and back in London Harrison distributed them to friends.

That year, interest in the Hare Krishna chant expanded in a variety of ways. On his posthumous album, titled Om, jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and fellow musicians opened and closed the improvised tracks by quoting Krishna from the Bhagavad Gita: “Rites that the Vedas ordain and the rituals taught by the scriptures, the oblation, the flame into which they are offered—all these am I.” That was also the year Jimi Hendrix released his album Axis: Bold as Love, with his own face superimposed over the image of Krishna’s Universal Form. Soon after, Allen Ginsberg appeared on William F. Buckley’s television talk show Firing Line and sang the Hare Krishna mantra to a nationwide viewing audience. Not long after that, folksinger Tom Paxton referred to the Hare Krishna chant in his song “Talking Vietnam Potluck Blues”: “So we all lit up and by and by / The whole platoon was flyin’ high / With a beautiful smile on the Captain’s face / He smelled like midnight on St. Mark’s Place / Cleanin’ his weapon / Chantin’ sumpin’ about Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna.” Author Tom Wolfe added to the momentum by including a description of the mantra in his book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.

Before coming to America, had the Swami imagined what success would look like, he might not have foreseen such assimilation of the maha-mantra into pop culture. If he had been told, he would not have objected. “Chaitanya Mahaprabhu used to cover his ears, pretending to not want to hear the chanting, as a way of tempting children to chant Hare Krishna,” he recalled. “However it is done, the chanting is potent and it will act.”

Through a combination of karmic good fortune, divine plan, jazz albums, pop songs and talk shows, the Hare Krishna mantra was spreading and the Swami’s following grew.

About the Author
Paula is president of Just ASK Publications & Professional Development and an ASK Group Senior Consultant. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia. She is the author of Why Didn't I Learn This in College?, The 21st Century Mentor's Handbook, Instruction for All Students, and Leading the Learning. Paula holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Education with an emphasis on Special Education from the University of North Florida, and has completed post-graduate course work in administration and educational leadership at the University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University, and George Mason University. She was recently awarded an honorary Doctorate of Education by MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois, as well as the Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Education by the College of Education at the University of Oklahoma. A number of real life case studies also enrich the book. This book will prove particularly useful to power systems operations professionals in the developing economies, and also to researchers and students involved in studying power systems operations and control. 

About the Author

Dr. Pradip Chanda, has more than 34 years of experience as a power plant professional in various capacities at the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), India. Starting his career as a commissioning engineer of 200 MW and 500 MW thermal sets, has given him exposure to the intricacies of behaviour of equipment and subsystems of thermal power plants. Working as a shift-charge engineer in a 1600 MW super thermal power station and heading the efficiency department of a thermal power station for more than nine years has enriched him with knowledge on operation and maintenance practices, different standards of efficiency and testing procedures. The journey carried him through corporate planning of NTPC for 5 years along with a rich 7 years’ experience in the training and development wing of NTPC as a senior faculty member. Currently he is serving as General Manager (HR) at an NTPC power station. Dr Chanda graduated as an Electrical Engineer from the erstwhile Bengal Engineering College. He received his M.Tech and PhD degrees from IIT Delhi. He has published a number of research papers in various journals and conferences. His areas of research interest include mathematical modelling of physical systems, heat transfer and control system.  

Suparna Mukhopadhyay, M.Tech, Ph.D, is a mechanical Engineer from NIT Agartala with her graduate degrees from Jadavpur University. She has a unique combination of industrial and research/teaching experience of more than 20 years. Presently, she is serving at the National Thermal Power Corporation as a senior manager. Prior to that she was a visiting scientist in the Engineering Mechanics Unit, JN Centre for Advanced Scientific research, Bangalore and Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering in Kalyani Government Engineering College, Kalyani, West Bengal for a combined period of more than 15 years. Dr. Mukhopadhyay has already published a textbook on fluid mechanics and a large number of research publications.
