I am not sure where to start!!! Profound, whacky, utterly insensible but absolutely meaningful at the same time...Douglas Adams was an astute observer of human behaviour which is manifest in the way his characters behave. The fact that they are a part of the most improbable settings highlights that behaviour further.Saying that this book is not as profound or entertaining as the 1st one or THHGTTG is not an affront but a massive compliment to the other volumes.This book made me a bit melancholic which the other two volumes mentioned did not (I have read reviews of Mostly Harmless and have decided not to read it for the sake of compromising my interpretation of how things end with Arthur Dent and others). I am not sure what the real takeaway was supposed to be - that Gods too eventually fall or that the fallen were once magnificent, but I believe it is a bit of both.I really wish we would have had more of this genius to enjoy!!!

There's only one Douglas Adams. I'd give a lot to have more of his writing to read, but, with this book, I've read them all. Other authors try to be Douglas Adams, but he had an incredible ability with wit, dry humor, irony, cultural yet timeless references, and more that just can't be duplicated. If you're used to Douglas Adams writing, this will probably fit right into your expectations. If you're not, you're probably in for a ride. Somewhere between fantasy, sci-fi, and Monty Python, I found this book tremendous fun.

As much a stark raving lunatic fan as I am about all his works, this one is my absolute favorite. Every little detail in this wonderful, clever story is neatly wrapped back into itself, this book must be read multiple times to discover all its nuances, and they are so very worth discovering! Few authors make me laugh out loud while reading, Douglas Adams definitely was one (God rest his gloriously funny soul), and this book is a jewel.The best and the worst of human nature is all in here-- greed, brutal corruption, unthinkable consequences, depression, confusion, compassion, loyalty, and problems with the kids. There are also monsters, gods, divine powers, interdimensional travel, beheadings, and exploding airport check-in desks. And a mysterious eagle that circles above it all.If you're looking for wonderful quotes to tuck in your pocket, this book is loaded with them.I bought this copy because I wore out my first copy.

Like most, if not all, Adams' books it's about the journey and not the final arrival. I love D.A.'s facility with the language. One sentence or one section of the book flows so effortlessly to the next that it makes for very pleasurable reading. If you try to skim the book, you'll miss the best, typically understated, gags. And the gags abound. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion.Please do yourself a favor and don't hurry to the ending, because the book ends rather abruptly. You get a mental picture of Adams' editor standing on the desk shouting at him about how overdue the final copy is.Still, if you enjoyed Hitchhikers Guide and the follow on books, you will find this a good read. It is certainly much better than the first Dirk Gently novel.

To anyone who is familiar and enjoyed the Hitch Hiker's Guide series, either from reading the books or watching any of several versions in video form, this author needs neither introduction or further praise. Suffice to say that the two books that, sadly, constitute the whole of this series are yet another tour de force and provide a highly entertaining glimpse into a new fantasy concept with vast potential. Prepare to laugh and ponder, often at the intricacies of human relations, societal foibles and the usual blatant governmental corruption.

About the Author

Saraju Mohanty, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of North Texas, where he directs the NanoSystem Design Laboratory (NSDL). He obtained a Ph.D. in computer science and engineering from the University of South Florida in 2003, a master’s degree in systems science and automation from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 1999, and a bachelor’s degree (honors) in electrical engineering from Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar, India, in 1995. Dr. Mohanty’s research is in low-power, high-performance nanoelectronics. He is an author of hundreds of peer-reviewed journal and conference publications. Dr. Mohanty holds many U.S. patents. He has advised/co-advised many Ph.D. dissertations and numerous master’s theses. Dr. Mohanty currently serves as the chair of the Technical Committee on Very Large Scale Integration (TCVLSI), IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS). He serves on the editorial board of many peer-reviewed international journals, including IET-CDS Journal, Elsevier Integration Journal, and Journal of Low Power Electronics. Dr. Mohanty has served as a guest editor for many journals, including ACM Journal on Emerging Technologies in Computing Systems (JETC) for an issue titled “New Circuit and Architecture-Level Solutions for Multidiscipline Systems,” August 2012, and IET Circuits, Devices & Systems (CDS) for an issue titled “Design Methodologies for Nanoelectronic Digital and Analog Circuits,” September 2013. Grade 6 Up—Ryan McCray and Sarah Fincher wonder how Skeleton Creek, OR, received its name. Research takes them on a nighttime expedition to a mechanical dredge, where Ryan breaks his leg. The teens think the dredge is haunted by Joe Bush, a miner killed there. The book is interspersed with Sarah's videos, which can be accessed on the Internet. The mystery remains to be solved; sequels are guaranteed. Plot weaknesses mitigate the teen appeal of the Internet tie-in concept. The book's central flaw: it is not scary. Ryan's narration should provide creepy immediacy, but his constant insistence that he is petrified never plays out in the story. The book ramps up and peters out, without a climax or resolution of the mystery. The repetitive musings hold the pace to a slow walk, and Carman relies on contrivance to keep adults at bay. Another reason it lags is the lack of synergy between Ryan and Sarah, even though they are supposedly best friends. They communicate only via electronic means (their parents have forbidden their friendship), and their individual findings don't dovetail into one coherent story line. Even if one stops to watch Sarah's videos, there seem to be missing pieces of information that make the plot hard to follow. This book is short, but it's got a lot of good tips for learning Spanish (or any second language for that matter). The author encourages readers to set realistic goals to avoid getting burned out. His ideas about reading aloud are quite helpful in learning the correct pronunciation and accent. The author is also correct in stating that immersion, by itself, will not lead to a large vocabulary or fluency. For building your vocabulary in a new language, reading and making vocabulary lists are very helpful. The author is correct in stating that there is no easy way to become fluent in a language. It requires a lot of work. He provides a plan for setting realistic work goals that keep you progressing in the language. Find books and programs that you are interested in and immerse yourself in the language, paying particular attention to new expressions and phrases that are unfamiliar to you. In time, if you interact with the language in a meaningful and purposeful way, you will make progress. Comprehension of a new language usually precedes being able to speak the language fluently. This book is worth consideration for those who are serious about learning Spanish, and who are willing to set long-term goals to achieve fluency in the language.

As the book's title states, the methods suggested are not quick and easy. They are, however, very thorough. I found this book very encouraging. The author clearly has extensive experience with trying to learn Spanish. I don't know if his methods would work for everyone, but I believe they are certainly worth a try. If you have reached a stagnant point in your study of Spanish, you might find this book as helpful as I did. It has refreshed and renewed my desire to learn Spanish.

This short booklet, only 32 pages, is obviously neither a textbook of Spanish nor a series of specific exercises. But it is a group of valuable hints by an American who majored in Spanish, even spent a year in Puerto Rico, before realizing that he would need to do something more in order to become truly fluent. What he offers here is the self-discipline that brought him to the point where he is often mistaken for a native Spanish speaker (only not from around here). Many of these are common-sense, but I can see that they would be undeniably useful, especially for people who have studied a lot but reached a personal plateau.I have noted from my own study and also from working with ESL students in America that language skills comprise four different activities -- reading, writing, speaking, and listening -- and that different individuals progress at different speeds in the different disciplines. I myself am a comfortable reader in Spanish and pretty good writer, but shy as a speaker and easily overwhelmed as a listener. Del Gaudio concentrates mainly on the oral and aural skills, spending less time on the written ones, which I nonetheless think provide the necessary underpinning for speaking and understanding.Del Gaudio recommends word-lists and self-tests, regular reading aloud, memorization of passages from good literature, weekly grammar review, and daily conversation. That last one is the hardest; if you do not have a number of friends (or paid tutors) whose Spanish you trust and who are willing to talk with you on a regular basis, it can be hard to get in sufficient practice without going abroad. He has some good ideas with vocabulary learning, though, using a word-processor in inventive ways to test yourself and keep track of your progress. I have done something similar with a spreadsheet, both for vocabulary and irregular verb forms, which has the advantage of being easily randomized, checking the answers against a look-up list on a separate sheet, and keeping track of your score.He has a brief paragraph or two on a particular problem that affects North American learners: that they will have to choose between Castilian and South American Spanish, and numerous different regions within the Americas, each with its own idioms and characteristic pronunciation. He is wise in his advice to stick to standard forms wherever possible, but standard forms are often not what you will generally hear.But I absolutely agree with his bottom line. Becoming fluent in Spanish, indeed any language, requires two things. First, regular and disciplined groundwork in the study. And second, some compelling reason that will fill you with the urge to communicate and send you out among Spanish-speaking people in order to do so.I obtained a free copy of the eBook at the author's suggestion, but the review is my own.

This book gives you a clear and concise system to reach fluency in Spanish. It is comical how many gave this book a bad review because of the hard work it promotes. Sorry the author didn't zap you fluent! It's time suck it up and do the work and daily disciplines it takes to be fluent in Spanish. Best $3.00 I have spent in a while. Like a previous comment stated, it is common sense advice, however having it mapped out is a real help. I strated using it right away with the vocabulary from the novel I am reading in spanish. I put my words in Quizlet so I could practice, and I have a notebook where i am writing out evey word with definition 10 times. I have seen improvement already in my reading and retention of meaning. I will gradually get into the other strategies. (I have already purchased a mini tape recorder).

Yes, this book is super short. Yes, I still think it's worth the money I paid for it. Sometimes you just need someone to lay down the law for you and John Del Gaudio does that. This is what it takes to master Spanish. It's probably not the only way to do it, but it seems sound. I've only seriously studied Spanish for a few months, but I find myself constantly losing the majority of vocabulary I've learned and I needed to find a way to make it stick. What he recommends is not brain science, but simply a practical, easy to implement way of mastering a foreign language. It doesn't take many materials, but it does take discipline. It's up to you to decide if you have it.
