About the Author Christina Maslach is Professor of Psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. She received her A.B., magna cum laude, in Social Relations from Harvard-Radcliffe College in 1967, and her Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University in 1971. She has conducted research in a number of areas within social and health psychology. However, she is best known as one of the pioneering researchers on job burnout, and the author of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), the most widely used research measure in the burnout field. In addition to numerous articles, her books on this topic include Burnout: The Cost of Caring; the co-edited volume, Professional Burnout: Recent Developments in Theory and Research (with Wilmar Schaufeli); The Truth About Burnout (with Michael Leiter); Preventing Burnout and Building Engagement: A Complete Program for Organizational Renewal (with Michael Leiter), and Banishing Burnout: Six Strategies for Improving Your Relationship with Work (with Michael Leiter). The latter publications are based on Professor Maslach's work as a consultant with various organizations on issues of job burnout. Currently, she is the founding co-editor, with Michael Leiter, of the e-journal, Burnout Research, which will launch in 2014. Professor Maslach focuses on the development of a conceptual model of the burnout process, which articulates the key relationships between personal, social, and contextual variables. She takes an approach to assessing the interaction between person and situation variables in the workplace. Though I’m headlong in a fulfilling career as a public relations practitioner, I read this book on my morning train commute. Transparency dictates that I inform you Peter has been a friend for many years, and he asked me to read his book and provide a review. With that, understand I mean every word: this book, to me, represents “how to” literature at its best. But rather than teach you how to pursue and perfect a particular hobby or academic endeavor, Sims, in an approachable and “you-can-do-it” manner, provides a clear path to establishing and maintaining a career in home health care PT. One of the endearing aspects of the book is that Sims is open with his own career missteps so that the reader doesn’t make the same mistakes. As such, Sims is successful in welcoming the reader to relax and sit back as though he was giving a tour of his hometown to an old friend. About the Author

After graduating from Cornell University at age eighteen with majors in physics, mathematics and philosophy, Wolfgang Smith took an M.S. from Purdue, following which he spent three years at Bell Aircraft Corporation as an aerodynamicist. During this period he gained recognition for his pioneering papers on the effect of diffusion fields, which provided a theoretical solution to the re-entry problem for space flight. After receiving a Ph.D. in mathematics from Columbia University, Dr. Smith pursued a professorial career in that field. Soon however his center of interest shifted from the pursuit of science to the critique of scientism and the rediscovery of metaphysics as a theological discipline. He has authored six books and numerous articles, and is today widely recognized as a leading authority in these twin fields.
